As business is getting started surrounding the broadband network and mobile network, it has become a necessity to measure the quality of a network to evaluate the result and to give the customer their best experience possible. Evaluating a broadband network concerning speed is very important in today’s world because of the rapid increase in broadband networks and the internet. Hence, for optimal internet services, users can make informed decisions on the ISP services to utilize.īroadband network speed is one of the most cited characteristics when it comes to the quality of the broadband network. The result shows that the minimum broadband speed benchmark set by the National Broadband Committee has not been realized for some ISPs. In addition, the performance of three different ISPs at selected locations were evaluated using the developed application. The developed application showed significant accuracy, flexibility of usage along with its cost-effective implementation.

The developed application was tested against an existing software to confirm its accuracy. It also provides a facility for data storage and display on a map. A three-in-one web-based broadband mapping application (capable of detecting the mapping location and measuring the speed of the Internet Service Provider (ISP) was developed. Exploring the software approach using a web application, it becomes plausible to carry out broadband mapping. With a variety of methods existing in achieving broadband mapping, a more compact approach that is both easy to use and cost effective is necessary. Our analysis demonstrates various systemic issues, including high variability in NDT7 test results and systematically under-performing servers in the Ookla network.īroadband mapping plays an intricate part in broadband availability. To characterize the behavior of these tools in wide-area deployment, we collect more than 40,000 pairs of Ookla and NDT7 measurements across six months and 67 households, with a range of ISPs and speed tiers. Our results show that Ookla and NDT7 report similar speeds when the latency between the client and server is low, but that the tools diverge when path latency is high.

To study the effects of the test design, we conduct a series of controlled, in-lab experiments under a variety of network conditions and usage modes (TCP congestion control, native vs. Our goal is to characterize when, how much and under what circumstances these two speed tests differ, as well as what factors contribute to the differences. While there are other sources of inaccuracies the most significant in our view is that the file size is far too small particularly given the inaccuracies of timing the download in. They calculate this speed by timing the download of a single image file using 75 Javascript. For a 12 Mbps with Powerboost to 15 Mbps connection, CNet exclusively measures the download speeds as being below 2 Mbps (see Figure 13).
